On the Route at Jels Midtsø, you walk around Jels Midtsø and into the forest. A varied hike that is part of the Ancient Road's Pearls.
The route at Jels Midtsø is a beautiful Ancient Road Pearl of 4.8 kilometers. The route is certified by the Deutsches Wanderinstitut as a Premium Easy hiking route, so you are sure of a quality experience, good signage of the route and benches along the way. On the route you will experience beautiful nature, lakes and forests.
You walk on forest paths - some close to the lake can be a little damp and there may be tree roots. The route is affordable and can be walked by most people without any problems.
The lakes are located in a meltwater tunnel from the last ice age - the melted water ran away under the heavy ice sheet. When the ice retreated, a barren tundra remained. Gradually, reindeer arrived, and on their heels came some of the first people in Denmark. They hunted the reindeer, and the tunnel valley was a great place to catch them.
Later, the great Farris Forest was added, which covered the entire area and made it dangerous and difficult to get around. Therefore, the branches of the Ancient Road have gone further west - including at Fæsted, where Denmark's largest gold treasure from the Viking Age has been found.
Today, the Jels Lakes and Jels Forests are a fantastic recreational area. The Ancient Road's hiking route runs between Jels Nedersø and Jels Midtsø, and here this route connects to the Ancient Road like a Pearl of the Ancient Road.
